100 Years Of Research

The main objective of Dr Anders Hård’s endeavour was to create a colour system based on how humans perceive and experience colour. The research methods employed required groups of people to look at colours in a standardised, controlled setting and to judge their resemblance to the six elementary colours - that is colours which, in their purest state, cannot be compared to any other colour – blue, green, yellow, red, white and black. In total, a million test judgements were made by a test group of 30 individuals.

The results were subjected to detailed computer analysis and a comparison drawn against the same colour tests measured with objective colour instruments. Evaluating the results further it revealed that people with ‘normal’ colour vision perceive colours in an identical way. However, the questions concerning how and why people form opinions of colour remain to be fully realised – this perhaps the next step for the continuing research into the unanswered mysteries of colour.
