New NCS Exterior

The unique NCS Exterior Collection makes external colouring a joy.

The new NCS Exterior is a unique concept in contemporary colouring. Designed and created by our team of researchers, Exterior is a collection of colours specifically for use facades.
In our many years of colour research we have collected huge amounts of data on how colours are used externally, how they change under different viewing conditions and how they are produced. This information forms the base for this special colour collection which draws out 322 colours which are seperated into three categories for ease of use.
"NCS Exterior is a synthesis ofmodern colour design. Countless hours of study have been investedinto the variables that affect the way we view and use colour in our built environment. Social responsibility, environmental concerns, colourfastness, inherent and perceived colou, materials, availability of pigments, surfaces and analysis of historical and contemporary exterior colours have all been taken into deep consideration while developing the colours in NCS Exterior," says Kristina Enberg, Architect and Colour Designer - one of the key members of Exterior's development team.

STOCKHOLM DESIGN WEEK

Earlier this month Stockholm was filled to the rafters as producers, manufacturers, designers, architects, journalists and specifiers descended on the city for its annual Design Week. NCS Colour had a wonderful fair, with plenty of new contacts and people investigating the opportunity to borrow the new Colour Scan 2.0 to scan in their colour selections.

Our week long seminar series looking at the NCS Exterior and how to apply it to our outside environment and introducing the great new NCS Insight was also a huge hit. Despite being hit by a giant snowstorm, Thursday's Insight seminar was so well attended that some late comers were treated to standing room only.

Even on the opening morning, mere hours after the Stockholm Furniture Fair opened, Architonic's Poul Mygind Jensen hit the nail on the head with a comment which rang true for the rest of the week; "It's much warmer and active than Cologne." The opening seminar from this year's guest of honor, Arik Levy was a huge hit, with the main seminar hall filled with admirers of his unique approach to combining technology with design.

Arguably the most unsuspected and original colourways we've seen in a while came from Danish brand Stouby, whose stand was awash with dirty pastels which jarred so well in the main hall against the glossy, chlichéd brights of the international giants. Stouby's designs featured classic lines and shapes in tactile upholstery which suited the incredible colourways. So fresh was its use of colour that Lisa White, who is busy creating WGSN's new interior trend website (homebuildlife), gave it a special mention in her Designboost talk later in the week.

Mix's editor, Tamsin Kingwell (who had recently returned disappointed from the normally vibrant Maison&Objet) also noticed an uplift in quality, colour and exciting design pieces. "It's great, Stockholm has given me huge lift after seeing nothing really this time in Paris," she commented.

Another special mention has to be given to Massproductions, a collaboration between British designer, Chris Martin, and his Swedish design partner Magnus Elebäck. Its new steel tubed Jig Chair (jig the name for the device which holds tubes in place prior to welding) featured a range of engaging, clean colour combinations that felt very progressive. Simple and well made, it's already marked as a future classic.

Despite the snow falling and chilly weather, Stockholm's Design Week was a great display of homegrown design talent and a true showcase of the unique colour sensibility of the Swedish designed and built environment.

NCS Navigator

Relaunched in two exciting new versions...

Last year NCS Colour released NCS Navigator; an online colour design tool that let you interact with the three dimensional NCS Colour Space and create harmonic colour palettes. NCS Navigator has been such a success that over one hundred thousand designers and architects made it part of their daily creative routine.

Today, the NCS Navigator is relaunched in two new versions with a completely new design and added functionality, with one special edition developed for the professional user.

The Freemium version brings features to the user in the shape of being able to design colour combinations based on e.g. similar whiteness, blackness and chromaticness. Today's colourist needs to be able to assess colours against not only white but black and grey and this can be achieved at a click. To further aid the selection process and physical Colour Sample location it is possible to show selected colours in the 3D Colour Space. Colour palettes designed by a user can also be shared between friends on the social web such as facebook.

The Premium version includes even more functionality suited for the modern colour professional. NCS Navigator 2.0 Premium integrates with the new NCS Colour Scan 2.0, enabling colours from the scanner to be downloaded straight into NCS Navigator. Palettes and combinations can be saved for future reference and exported into design programs such as Adobe® Creative Suite®, Autodesk® AutoCAD® and Graphisoft® ArchiCAD®. NCS colours can be converted into RGB (sRGB and AdobeRGB), CMYK(Coated and Uncoated) and Lab for Print for use in all major graphic design, image, CAD and web design software, allowing complete colour control between digital design and reality.

"Navigator 2.0 in its two new versions bring even greater power and control over the NCS System, its notations and its integration into the design process. Our focus has been to build on the features of Navigator 1.0 to increase the way our users interact with colour in the digital design process. NCS Navigator 2.0 give more flexibility, usability and freedom to the modern colour user."
